Porches, patios, pergolas... whatever you're building, you need to be aware of some building limitations and requirements.
Depending on where you live, the requirements can change, but there are some rules of thumb to keep in mind. If your project (building a deck, adding an outdoor kitchen, covering a patio, etc.) meets any of the following requirements, you will need to get permits for the construction. If your project:
- is over 100 square feet
- is attached to your home
- will be on a permanent foundation
- will include electrical or plumbing work
- requires engineering or structural calculations
- will be enclosed (like a sun room)
... then you will need drawings so you can get permits for the work to be done.
Of course, this is just a quick example of some of the things that would require building permits, and you should always make sure to do your homework before you start any project (getting plans made after you build something is always more expensive, and might require you to remove or rebuild areas).
